The Subaru Impreza WRX STi Tommykaira M20b 2.2 is one of the rarest and most fascinating JDM complete cars of the early 2000s. Produced by Tomita Yume Koujou in Kyoto, it represents Tommykaira’s unique approach to performance tuning—building fully reimagined, street-legal cars with balanced upgrades across engine, suspension, bodywork, and interior. Following the first-generation GC8-based M20b, this second-generation GDB-based model elevated performance even further, making it one of the most desirable Subaru tuner cars of its era.

At the heart of the M20b 2.2 is a stroked and re-engineered version of Subaru’s EJ20 turbocharged boxer engine, increased to 2,149cc. Using a combination of bespoke forged pistons, revised bore and stroke dimensions, and optimized ECU mapping, output rose to approximately 355 ps with torque around 44–45 kgf·m. Importantly, Tommykaira retained the factory-spec Garrett turbocharger for reliability, while focusing on drivability and strong mid-range punch. The result is a more flexible, everyday usable powerband while retaining the high-revving character of the original STi.

Chassis and handling improvements matched the engine upgrades. The M20b 2.2 came equipped with Bilstein dampers, bespoke Tommykaira suspension tuning, and Brembo 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers, ensuring balanced, confidence-inspiring handling. Lightweight Tommykaira PRO-R forged 18-inch wheels wrapped in 235/40R18 tires reduced unsprung weight while enhancing grip.

The body was finished in Metallic Midnight Blue, a Tommykaira-exclusive color, paired with an aggressive aero package including unique bumpers and side skirts. Inside, the cabin reflects Tommykaira’s signature touches: branded Recaro sports seats, a 260 km/h Tommykaira gauge cluster, and the iconic turtle-logo aluminum shift knob—a symbol used on the Tommykaira ZZ sports car, representing the “turtle beating the rabbit,” their philosophy of challenging major manufacturers with small-team innovation.

This particular example also benefits from tasteful updates including a Blitz radiator, Kakimoto muffler, and an HKS turbo timer, while maintaining the full original Tommykaira specification.
